Healthcare Policy, Innovation and Management (HPIM)

In brief

The Master Healthcare Policy, Innovation and Management (HPIM) is intended for prospective managers, policy makers, consultants, researchers and staff employees in health care. The program will prepare students to be innovative professionals who are able to influence the future direction of health care and to transform the current health care systems. We offer our students an advanced, distinctive, interdisciplinary and internationally oriented master program. The key topics are economics of health care, innovation management and quality management, governance, patient logistics, managing change and implementation, financial management. HPIM considers different aspects of the development, implementation and outcomes of innovation in health care, i.e. policy aspects, ethical, organisational, managerial, economic and content aspects at different levels (individual and group level, organisational level, regional, national and international level).

Profile

Never has the need for innovation in health care been greater than today. Consumer demands and expectations are rising. Aging and the advancement of new medical options have led to a growth in health care expenditures, and therefore most countries now spend a substantial part of their national income on health care. State involvement in health care features an unprecedented growth. These developments raise fundamental questions about how to organize and implement patient oriented health care, how to guarantee universal access to a fair package of health services, good health care quality while containing costs, and how to improve the performance of health care systems in general and health care providers in particular. Key to all these issues is the need for innovations (‘knowledge applied to tasks that are new and different’). The characteristics and quality of innovations, innovation strategies and their outcomes have a major impact on the lives of service users. Therefore, HPIM will provide the future health care managers, policy makers, consultants and staff members with state-of-the-art knowledge about the contents, strategies, causes and effects of innovations, and the social, economic and supranational context of innovations. HPIM-students will also become competent in dealing adequately with innovations in the organisation and delivery of health care and the surrounding health care system.
