Jochen Cals winner of Rabobank Award 2010

Jochen Cals received the award for best thesis at the University of Maastricht in 2010. The thesis describes how a point of care CRP test (this measures, in just a few minutes, C-reactive protein, a proxy for infection) in combination with a training in improved communication skills helps to prevent unnecessary prescription of antibiotics to patients with a cough.

The jury praised the scientific quality and the social importance of the thesis. The outcome of the thesis is an important step in pushing back resistance to antibiotics.

The thesis and parts of it already received several awards and was published is renowned publications such as the British Medical Journal. Among the prizes Cals’ work received were the ZonMw Pearl, the Heert Dokterprijs and the CaRe dissertation prize.
