Philip van der Wees selected as Harkness Fellow of the Commonwealth Fund

Philip van der Wees is selected as fellow for the Commonwealth Fund’s Harkness Fellowships 2011-12. The Commonwealth Fund provides a unique opportunity for mid-career health services researchers to spend a year in the United States as a Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice.

Fellows work with leading US experts to conduct a research study that addresses a critical issue on the health policy agenda in both the US and their home country.

Van der Wees’ research proposal is aimed at developing an approach for including socio-demographic differences in clinical practice guidelines to reduce health disparities. Recommendations in guidelines are usually formulated for ‘average’ patients, and relevant socio-demographic differences (e.g. sex/gender, race/ethnicity) are usually not included. The approach will include an instrument to support guideline developers in considering these differences through the different steps of the development process.

Philip van der Wees is senior researcher within the CAPHRI program Epidemiology of Musculoskeletal Disorders, and is responsible for the program Quality & Implementation in a collaboration of CAPHRI with IQ healthcare (Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre) and the Royal Dutch Society for Physical therapy (KNGF).
