Becoming a PhD student

All information related on how to become a CAPHRI PhD student is written below.

Internal PhD student

In general, internal PhD students are selected through open competition when there is a vacancy. Available vacancies are posted at Academic Transfer. In addition, CAPHRI wants to create possibilities for students to write their own research plan (facilities supporting this are the Health Sciences Research Master and the Faculty Kootstra Fellowship).

External Master graduates

External Master graduates can apply for admission as PhD candidate by finding a promotor (e.g. through the PhD co-ordinator or scientific director) who is willing to supervise them after having assessed the quality of the research proposal and CV.

Registration of CAPHRI PhD students

PhD students are registered fully with CAPHRI only when the following documents are received by the PhD co-ordinator:
  • A registration form;
  • A CV, showing a proper education to start a PhD trajectory (suitable Master’s degree);
  • A research proposal of good quality, which is approved by the promotor;
  • The Training and Supervision plan, agreed upon by the PhD student and (co-)promoters  within the first three months of the PhD trajectory, which should be approved by the PhD co-ordinator;
  • A sound and feasible project plan, including publication plan and time schedule, to be regularly updated by the PhD student and (co-)promoters, drawn up in the first three months of the trajectory.

Only when these 5 requirements have been met, a personal PhD student budget is made available. Use of the budget should be announced beforehand to CAPHRI. The regulation (to be updated in 2012) can be requested at CAPHRI. Please, contact the PhD co-ordinator, Hannerieke van der Boom.

'CAPHRI organises meetings to discuss research with prominent experts in that particular field.'
