On 14 March 2016 the Dr Jan Huynen Award was presented to the best PhD dissertation in the field of life– and biomedical sciences. Out of 84 applications the jury selected five nominees from which the winner was chosen. Among the nominees were Jim Odekerken and Hugo Fokkenrood. Jim was selected with his thesis entitled ‘Orthopaedic infections: pre-clinical models, diagnostic tools and novel coatings’ and Hugo with his thesis ‘Innovative strategies for intermittent claudication: towards a stepped care approach and new outcome measures’. They will receive € 1000 each. The winner is Marlies Gijs from Université de Liège who will receive a prize of € 5000. The winner and nominees will receive considerable press attention and a personal introduction to the Brightlands network.
