Worldwide antibiotic resistance is a big problem and associated with an increase of morbidity and mortality. One of the latest interventions to tackle this problem is the introduction of the so-called ‘antimicrobial stewardship’ and the associated antibiotics-teams (A-teams).
Is Antimicrobial Stewardship really the secret weapon against antibiotic resistance? And if so, what is this exactly and how and where do we have to insert this? Is antibiotic resistance in Dutch hospitals also such a big problem and if so which role do A-teams have in tackling this problem? We do not hear much of antibiotic resistance in the primary care, f.i. at the general practice. Do they encounter the problem there too? And how is the situation in nursing homes; is the principle of Antimicrobial Stewardship applied there too?
