Luc Smits is a clinical epidemiologist with a focus on perinatal health. He has been leading several multi-center studies in obstetrics, and is a member of many project teams within the realm of obstetrics and gynecology. He has (co-)authored >100 papers in national and international medical journals and is the main author of an influential article in The Lancet explaining the possible mechanism underlying the adverse effects of narrow pregnancy spacing. Smits’ methodological interest is in validity issues in prognostic and prediction research. Together with Dr Sander van Kuijk, he developed and organized a post-doctoral course on Clinical Prediction Models. He has acted as a co-promotor of 7 PhD students; defence of four more PhD students is expected in the next few years. He leads the Clinical Epidemiology Research Unit (Research Line: Optimizing Patient Care) of CAPHRI Care and Public Health Research School at Maastricht University. He is a methodological consultant of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the MUMC, a member of the methodological advisory board of the Dutch Obstetrical Consortium, and deputy member of the Medical Ethical Committee of UM/azM. On Feb 14, 2011, Smits was appointed ‘Epidemiologist B’ (highest rank) by the Dutch Epidemiologic Society (VvE). Smits is GCP Certified (Nov 10, 2011) and SMBWO Certified (Nov 23, 2011). As a medical journalist he published over a hundred articles in Dutch newspapers with a combined daily circulation of 950.000.
